Product and Service Design (PSD)

Course description

Successful new products and services are basic drivers of business growth and economic development. Innovation management hence becomes an imperative aspect for almost all firms; whether they be manufacturers or service providers, technology leaders or followers, or in mature or emerging industries. This course analyzes the innovation management function, including research, development, and provision of new products and services from a management perspective. It examines the managerial aspects of how firms develop innovations and react to them.

The course will be taught primarily through lectures, case discussions and simulations. Students will build on readings and lecture material to analyze cases of how companies generate, manage and exploit technologies in rapidly changing environments. Students will often be placed in the role of a project manager or key decision maker and asked to address issues related to the management of technological innovation and its financial implications.

This course will outline and examine the managerial aspect related to the design and development of new products and services. It will discuss what firms can do to improve the way they manage and encourage innovation.

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:

1. Recognize the underpinnings of firm innovation and appropriation strategies.

2. Illustrate academic research methods in technology and innovation management.

Skills and abilities

3. Apply tools and concepts that can help firms become more effective in the design and development of new products and services.

4. Discuss key strategies to appropriate rents from innovations.

Judgment and approach

5. Critically evaluate the role of strategies and structures that enhance the success in product and service design as well as their implications for society and the individual firm.

6. Develop an innovation strategy.
